HUDSON, NY / DENVER, CO — The national weekly radio program ETOWN will honor Hudson Valley resident Sam Pratt at its annual rock festival on Labor Day at Red Rocks Amphitheater outside Denver. Pratt will receive the program’s "e-chievement" award for his 5+ years of organizing and activism with Friends of Hudson, including his role in the group’s successful 1999 campaign to prevent siting of a hazardous waste plant along the Hudson River, and also his current volunteer work challenging St. Lawrence Cement’s massive, coal-fired cement proposal in Columbia County, which has raised concerns about health threats and other impacts throughout the tri-state area. ETOWN is heard weekly from coast to coast on both National Public Radio and commercial stations. In the Hudson Valley, the show is broadcast by WDST 100.1 FM (Poughkeepsie/Woodstock) and WKZE (98.1 FM/ 1020 AM, Kingston/Sharon/Great Barrington). The show is taped in front of a live audience, and features top musical artists as well as segments about communities and the environment. Pratt will be interviewed by host Helen Forster onstage at the concert, which will feature Michelle Shocked, Barenaked Ladies, Keller Williams, and the Blind Boys of Alabama. Past ETOWN guests have included former President Jimmy Carter, filmmaker Michael Moore, and folk music legend Pete Seeger. "This is an unexpected honor, and also a real treat for me to travel to Colorado," Pratt, a full-time resident of Hudson, commented on the award. "I haven’t been out of the Northeast since the whole cement plant issue arose. In fact, I almost never leave the Hudson city limits. So it'll be a real change of scenery." With over 3,500 contributors, Friends of Hudson is the largest membership organization in Columbia County. Pratt, 34, is a former reporter for national magazines and newspapers, and a full-time resident of Hudson where he has served as the City's Commissioner of Grants (2000) and on the Steering Committee for its Comprehensive Plan (2003). A National Merit Scholar and graduate of Yale, he grew up in Berkshire County, Massachusetts along the New York State line in his great-grandfather's house.
