September 17, 2002 Position Statement: SLC Greenport Project In recent years the Hudson Valley, like its neighbors in The Berkshires and Litchfield County, has made great strides toward achieving a prosperous and sustainable future. This progress is based upon a sound mix of clean businesses that create jobs while protecting residents’ health. Such businesses respect and rely upon the region’s unique scenic and heritage resources, rather than sacrificing our irreplaceable assets. It is in this context that our groups oppose the massive coal-fired cement plant proposed by St. Lawrence Cement for Columbia County, N.Y. Out-of-scale and out-of-place, this facility would pose a clear threat to the public health, cause irreparable damage to our natural and historic resources, and stifle positive economic growth. Our concerns are exacerbated by the documented compliance failures of this company during the past decade in other host communities. We thus call upon public officials, civic organizations, and residents alike to join us in opposing the St. Lawrence Cement Greenport project.
