In a trio of letters published June 30th in The Register-Star, St. Lawrence Cement's recent public relations gambits were taken apart in devastating fashion by members of the local medical community. These included a letter signed by 22 doctors on the medical staff of Columbia Memorial Hospital; a letter from Marsha Davis, a nurse from Germantown; and finally a letter from Dr. Ira Marks, the retired Chief of Pediatrics at CMH--who has written extensively before on the health risks of "fine particulate matter" (called "PM 2.5") emitted by cement kilns and other industrial processes. Hand-painted signs and much more at July 6th cookout Friends of Hudson's annual cookout on July 6th at the Federation of Polish Sportsmen in Greenport will focus this year on the creativity of our membership. Hand-painted lawn signs painted by members, opposing St. Lawrence Cement, will be on display and (silent) auctioned off to benefit the group. The picnic runs from noon to 3 pm on Saturday at the Club, with burgers, hotdogs and drinks provided by the Sportsmen; members are encouraged to also bring potluck items such as salads and desserts. The Federation is on Newman Road in Greenport, off Route 23B, surrounded by St. Lawrence Cement's proposed 1,200-acre mine. Click HERE for a map showing where the Club is located. This year's event may also (weather permitting) include at least one special surprise visual demonstration. Evening of July 6th: Tom Tom Club benefit concert The reknowned Tom Tom Club, formed after the breakup of Talking Heads, will perform at the Hudson waterfront on the evening of July 6th at 8 pm to support Friends of Hudson. The concert, organized by Club Helsinki of Great Barrington and Patrick Doyle of The Port of Hudson, will open with The Hotheads and an invocation by current New York State Poet Laureate John Ashbery along with poet Robert Kelly. Both teach at Bard College. The Port of Hudson is the former Basilica Industria (also known locally as "the glue factory"), just south of the Hudson Amtrak station. This marks the first concert at the Port as well as Club Helsinki's first event in Columbia County.
