4th annual picnic draws 350 members, old and new
On a sweltering July 5th, the 4th annual Friends of Hudson picnic at the Federation of Polish Sportsmen in Greenport drew 350 attendees -- including 42 new members. Hand-crafted by over 30 quilters from the area, the project raised over $4,000 for the group's legal challenges to the proposed coal-fired St. Lawrence Cement project. The 40-acre Sportsmen's Club on Becraft Mountain is surrounded by 1,200 acres of land which SLC seeks to turn into a vast mine, but the company's mining rights were recently "ungrandfathered" by two DEC judges. Rock-and-roll was provided by bassist and painter Roger Mason of Chatham, who assembled a crackerjack 5-man band for the occasion. In addition, a sturdily-constructed pinata in the shape of a duck made by Holly Allen of Claverack was finally felled after more than 100 hits by an intense crowd of kids in attendance. A mini-silent auction was also held, with items donated by The Rural Gourmet at Sunset Meadows, Arenskjold Antiques, Munder-Skiles, Jim and Meg Cashen, Ruth Moser Real Estate, Alice Platt, Fayal Greene, Claire Oravec and Sam Pratt.
